"His father wove sarees so fine they could fold into a matchbox — and that became our name."— The MatchBox Origin, Sircilla
From a loom in Sircilla to the Prime Minister
MatchBox Sarees is led by Nalla Vijay, a handloom weaver born and raised in Sircilla, Telangana — India's handloom capital. He grew up learning the language of threads, counting yarns and mastering the slow art of making silk behave like gold.
His work received national recognition when he wove a special silk shawl — embedded with a QR code showcasing India's achievements — and presented it to the Honourable Prime Minister of India, completing the weave in just twelve days.
Inspired by his father, who was celebrated for weaving sarees that could fold into a matchbox, Vijay built on that legacy — adding gold, silver, fragrance, and a commitment to weaving only on demand. Every thread, checked by hand before the box closes.
